Friday's Ride (May 26, 2006) was officially a success and incorporated several
Macomb Critical Mass 'firsts'. We had about 24 riders and rode a route
that included the Square and parts of the Southeast and Southwest Macomb
Participation was down slightly from last month, but still a fantastic
turnout for a month when students are gone and many year-round residents
take vacations.
Factoid: As a percentage of population a ride of 25 people in Macomb
is equivalent to a ride of 4000 people in Chicago!
Macomb Critical Mass Firsts (somebody please correct me if I've
messed any of these up):
1. Our first 'tag-along' pedaler and as such perhaps our youngest
pedaling participant to date
2. Our first ride with a trailer, a recumbant, and a tandem.
3. Our first member of the Macomb City Council to ride - Ken Zahnle
4. Our first attendance by local press (Macomb Eagle)
5. Our first ride photos to be added to the website - Both Kent Harris
and I took photos during the ride. They can be seen on the
website at: http://critical-mass.macomb.com
This makes 5 for 5 of successful critical mass rides in Macomb.
Thank you all who came out to support and/or ride with us. I hope to
see you all next month: June 30 2006 (last day of June).

The Critical Mass ride had our largest group to date last Friday,
approximately 30 riders of all ages (range 3 to almost 70?). We
looped around the SW part of town and made brief forrays onto Grant
and Jackson (east and north of the Square) before taking our victory
lap around the Courthouse.
Weather was great, conversation was great. and most (though not all!)
the cars and trucks we encountered were supportive. But, hell, with
30 of us we have a bit of weight to throw around.
Don't forget the next ride: Friday, May 26.
Hey fellow cyclists. We had an awesome ride on Friday, March 31,
accompanied by warm weather and great tunes. Depending on who was
counting, we had 16 or 18 people participate. We visited SE Macomb
for the first time, rounding Compton Park and then headed over to the
NW side of town (east of WIU campus) before heading back to the
Square for our victory lap around the courthouse and then to our
starting point at the fountain in Chandler Park--with the
encirclement of the fountain as a final flourish.

We had another great Critical Mass ride Friday. We had one more rider
than in January - so the ride is officially a growing phenomenon
.
Weather was brisk but very comfortable in proper clothing. Temperatures
were in the upper 40's.
We had an AMAZING first critical mass ride on Friday. 11 riders in Macomb
for a January evening ride is much better than I ever dreamed of.
Of course, the unseasonably warm weather helped a lot. Most people rode
with lights - and I pulled my trailer with blinking red tail-lights on
all sides of it. We would have had tunes from my jam-box, but it didn't
seem to want to operate on battery power. I am looking for suggestions
for music to play next month!
